The Iron Mike memorial to the American Airborne forces which dropped around St Mere Eglise on D Day. La Fire was taken by the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) who defended the causeway below the memorial from German attacks over the next few days. This included attacks by German armour, until one paratrooper set up his bazooka on the bridge and knocked the lead tank out.
