Rct. Matthew Haltom, Platoon 2090, Fox Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, adjusts his sling while practicing firing positions Oct. 3, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits must qualify on the rifle range, firing at targets up to 500 yards away, in order to graduate. Recruits use the sling to provide better support for the rifle. Haltom, an 18-year-old Cleveland native is scheduled to graduate Nov. 15, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
