Bolanos, a 25-year-old native of Phoenix, trains recruits for five days on the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship, shooting techniques and rifle range commands in preparation for firing live rounds the following week. The Marine Corps holds the longest basic marksmanship training for recruits of any United States military service. Redding, an 18-year-old native of Mount Airy, N.C., is scheduled to graduate Nov. 15, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
