3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division

FORT CARSON, Colo. – From being one of the original Buffalo Soldier units, to fighting in the Indian Wars during the 1800s, and being one of the elements that contributed to the capture of Saddam Hussein, the 10th Cavalry Regiment has been an integral part of the history of the Army and the nation.

The 4th Squadron, 10th Cav. Reg., 4th Infantry Division, recently commemorated that history and tradition when they hosted the 146th Annual Birthday Celebration in honor of the 10th Cav. Reg., at the squadron headquarters on Fort Carson, July 26.

“We are at a point in our Army where we need to go back to basics,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Edwin Rivera, senior enlisted leader, 4th Sqdn., 10th Cav. Reg. “Our troopers need to be proud of their heritage.”

All three active squadrons of the 10th Cav. Reg. are located on Fort Carson, including 1st Squadron, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, and 7th Squadron, 1st Brigade Combat Team. The three squadrons, along with Maj. Gen. Joseph Anderson, commanding general, 4th Inf. Div. and Fort Carson, and members of the division staff, joined the 4th Sqdn. at their troop headquarters for a regimental run, followed by a cake cutting ceremony, to celebrate the regiment’s birthday.

According to 1st Sgt. Matthew Dilcher, senior non-commissioned officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 4th Sqdn., it was important to use the run and ceremony, not only as a way to promote unit cohesion and morale, but to instill the traditions and values of the 10th Cav. Reg. into each soldier.

“[The unit] has a long lineage of history,” said Dilcher. “It’s important for our younger guys to know where they came from and learn the history of this unit. Having pride in our unit gives us motivation and a purpose to many of the things we do. If they have pride in their unit, they… won’t want to bring embarrassment upon their unit.”
