CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait - Service. Honor. Respect.

Three simple words chosen to entitle a ceremony held to celebrate National American Indian Heritage Month this November.

Though far from America, soldiers were still able to find a way to celebrate American Indian history at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait.

The ceremony was a gathering of soldiers beyond those with Native American backgrounds. In the audience were brigade commanders, command sergeants major, and others in positions of leadership from multiple units supporting the diversity of the soldiers in their command.

Guest speaking at the event was Sgt. 1st Class Glenn Zink, a soldier with the 1-180th Cavalry Regiment from Oklahoma, where he has spent 11 years as a police officer, 14 year as a state trooper, on top of 29 years of service in the Army. The state of Oklahoma has presented Sgt. 1st Class Zink with its own Humanitarianism award.

To his listeners, Zink said they were all heroes and everyone in attendance was a hero to someone.

“Those of you who sit in this room, along with our peers not in attendance have already taken a step towards being recognized by donning the uniform to serve our great country, and history shows to be Warrior one doesn’t have to have been born into a tribe … Look to the left and right, and around this room. Some of that spirit is within this room.”

At the end of the ceremony, Sgt. 1st Class Zink was presented with two awards of appreciation. The first award was given by Sgt. Maj. William Hayes of the ARCENT equal opportunity team. The second was a gift presented by Col. Eric Kerska, commander of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division.

Sgt. 1st Class Zink graciously accepted his gifts, shaking hands and smiling before the applauding audience.

“It has been an honor to have worn this uniform in the U.S. Army.”
