RABIAH, Iraq (June 10, 2006) -- The 1st Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Iraqi Army held a transfer of authority ceremony at Forward Operating Base Heider, taking operational responsibility for security in a crucial area that includes the Rabiyah port of entry.

"The battalion has made a lot of sacrifices for the Iraqi people," said Iraqi Col. Nazar, battalion commander. "This has come with the effort of all the people in the battalion."

Nazar also thanked coalition forces for helping the battalion achieve its successes.

The 1/3/3, which conducted pass-in-review with troops and tactical vehicles, provided security during Iraq's December 15th national elections.

"This is an historic day for you," said Iraqi Brig. Gen. Sammi, deputy commander of the 3rd IA Division. "This is the fruit of your efforts. This is due to your hard work fighting terrorism. This is a big responsibility. You will provide security for your country."

According to Sammi, the citizens in this area looked forward to this day and cooperated with Iraqi security forces to bring stability to their neighborhoods.

"You are fighters," he said. "You fight for God and your country and to defend your own people. This division is for all people: Arabs, Kurds, Turkomen, Muslims, Yzidi, and Christians. Our country and our people are waiting for our sacrifices."

Sammi advised the Soldiers to follow orders from higher levels and work with local governments, police, and border guards, and stop anyone who tries to disrupt peace in Iraq. He told the battalion to set the example for other units to follow.

"Iraqi Soldiers now have the lead for security operations," said Lt. Col. John Norris, commander, 4th Bn., 23rd Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team. "You join the ranks of several other outstanding Iraqi battalions within the Third Iraqi Division. Just like them, you are now in control of your battle space and controlling the fight against the insurgency."

According to Norris, the (1st) battalion assumes the responsibility of providing improved security for the Iraqi people. The IA battalion has the responsibility of securing one of the key ports of entry into Iraq. This is decisive terrain, and you must prevent the port from being used for illegal smuggling and a passage supporting terrorism. This is no easy task. You will face many challenges in the days to come.

"The enemy does not wish for peace and prosperity," Norris said, "only pain and suffering. He cannot survive against you if you are united, and you combine the efforts of the Iraqi army, Iraqi police, Iraqi border forces, and have the support of the Iraqi people. Securing the port of entry will be your measure of success in how you protect the citizens of Iraq."

Norris told the IA Soldiers they have demonstrated they are up to the task of protecting Iraqi citizens, and was honored to have served beside them as a partner.

"Each one of you standing here today has made a very brave and courageous decision to serve your nation during this turbulent rebuilding process," Norris said. "I applaud your example, your courage, your sacrifices, and know that your leadership and continued commitment will enable the Iraqi citizens to enjoy a free and democratic Iraq."
