RUSTON, La. – For National Guard Soldier, Spc. Crystal L. Marshall, of Ruston, La., the support of her employer is invaluable in pursuing her military career as a citizen-soldier.

Marshall, a medic with Headquarters Support Company of the 527th Engineer Battalion in Ruston, La., demonstrated her appreciation of that support by nominating her supervisor, Betty Moore, general manager of the Ruston Sleep Inn for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award.

"I received multiple orders for active duty this year and she [Moore] worked around them," Marshall said. "She gladly rescheduled me when it was needed. This year I had hurricane duties that she had to work around, and she even covered my shift herself when it was necessary."

The National Committee for ESGR sponsors the Patriot Award, which is designed to recognize employers for employment policies and practices that are supportive of their employees' participation in the National Guard and Reserve. All employer recognition and awards originate with nominations by Soldiers.

"It is my civic duty to help the Troops," Moore said. "It is my obligation to show support for the military and the Soldiers."

Local members of the ESGR and Soldiers from the 527th were on hand for the award presentation at the unit's Memorial Armory Complex in Ruston, La.

ESGR is a Department of Defense organization established to promote cooperation and understanding between Guard and Reserve members and their civilian employers.
