JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. -- Soldiers from the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, I Corps, are conducting a field training exercise in Leschi Town near Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, Jan. 20 through 23.

Senior leadership is creating an opportunity for their Soldiers to identify where they currently reside regarding their basic Soldier skills and allowing commanders to detect gaps in training that need to be addressed.

“When people think of a headquarters unit, they might not think about our primary role which is to help an expeditionary corps level unit conduct operations in a forward environment,” said Maj. Andy Riise, battalion operations officer, HHB. “It is paramount for Soldiers to be able to be proficient at each of the different skills we will be conducting in Leschi Town.”

The three major tasks “Trailblazer” Soldiers will focus on are movement, communications, and survivability, which will consist of multi-tier training objectives.

“This training is very important for Soldiers,” said Riise. “All Soldiers need know the basics, shoot, move, communicate and survive. This training will give commanders a base line to see what Soldiers might need to improve on before a deployment.”

The Soldiers will be conducting mounted and dismounted maneuvering as well as small unit formations and security. Also during this training, Soldiers will conduct movement under fire in an urban environment in Leschi Town, a resource which few bases have.

“The training will be good for us, it lets us know what we need to get better at,” said, Spc. Andrew Chambers, light wheeled mechanic, Headquarters Support Company, HHB. “I will be able to see firsthand what I don’t get to see in my daily work at the motor pool.”

The exercise will culminate with a nighttime training event that will test the Soldiers and show what they learned throughout the week.
