JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Every year families celebrate the joys of Thanksgiving whether at home, with family or close friends.

This year the I Corps dining facility staff at Joint Base Lewis – McChord opened its doors to Soldiers and their families for a festive Thanksgiving feast with all the traditional favorites.

Soldiers worked well into the night the day before the festivities and continued working all the way through lunch, making sure everything was in perfect order. They prepared enough to feed more than 275 soldiers and family members with 50 pounds of ham, 72 pounds of turkey and 45 pounds of roast beef just for starters.

But perhaps the best indication of the giving spirit of the occasion was the tireless efforts of the culinary specialists who made this special meal for their "extended" family.

“It’s a time for my Soldiers to shine,” said Staff Sgt. Brian Monbeck, administrative non-commissioned officer in charge of the dining facility. “Everybody gets to see all the long hours and dedication put in through the displays around the facility,”

An ice sculpture made to look like a cannon, a symbol of I Corps, not only impressed some guest with its design, but it also chilled sparkling cider as the beverage spiraled through the center of this see through creation.

I Corps Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Stephen R. Lanza was one of the ice sculpture’s biggest fans.

“This is the most creative thing I have ever seen,” said Lanza. “And it’s functional. It’s great.”

Lanza thanked the Soldiers who worked so hard to make Thanksgiving special for his troops and their families. He also walked through and chatted with patrons of the day’s meal.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the food and camaraderie as they sat and talked about things they were thankful for.

“It was fun,” said Sabrina Dick, wife of Spc. Daniel Dick, administrative assistant and driver for the I Corps Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion Commander. “It was really great to get together and see all the families and have good food.”

She too was impressed with the effort the staff of the dining facility made to make everyone feel at home and make the environment an enjoyable place to eat and share their lunch with.

“I wish I could decorate like that,” Dick said. “I really loved the ice sculpture they were pouring the cider through.”

Dick said Thanksgiving was a time to share with family, and not just blood relatives. Dick said having Thanksgiving lunch with her husband at the dining facility made it possible to share time with the rest of her Army family members.

“It makes it easier to be away from our actual family,” she said “It’s like our extended family here. It means a lot (to me) to get together and have a good time.”
