FORT STEWART, Ga. – Col. Thomas Gukeisen and Command Sgt. Maj. Alan Hummel, the command team for the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, hosted the Vanguard Brigade’s dining out, a ball-like event with dinner, a guest speaker and dancing, at Fort Stewart’s Club Stewart Nov. 22.

Special guests to the event included Hinesville Mayor James Thomas, Jr., and Lt. Gen. Edward Cardon, who recently became the commanding general of the U.S. Army Cyber Command and also served as the first commander of the Vanguard Brigade. Cardon’s presence was special because 4th IBCT will soon be casing its colors, and becoming the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, so the event brought Cardon, the first commander, together with Gukeisen, the final commander.

As the keynote speaker, Cardon talked about how he still feels about serving in 4th IBCT, and 3rd ID.

“I’d describe this brigade as a magical unit,” said Cardon. “What I mean by magical unit is, as I‘ve talked to my different commanders over the years, and soldiers that I run into over the years, wherever they are, they say ‘The 4th Brigade Combat Team was the best unit I ever served in.’ I say ‘That wasn’t me. That’s because it was a team.’”

Cardon also spoke about one of his soldiers during his time as Vanguard 6, during the brigade’s first deployment to Iraq. “Sgt. 1st Class Jason Barr … leading his patrol in the southern part of Baghdad … is seriously injured.”

Cardon went on to describe how Barr was evacuated to Landstuhl, Germany, refused to go home, and later returned to his platoon “with 80 pieces of shrapnel still in his body. His entire platoon reenlists to stay together in 3-7 Infantry,” Cardon said.

Following a presentation of door prizes, provided by the battalions and the brigade, Mayor Thomas, Cardon, and Gukeisen judged contests between the battalions, starting with a centerpiece competition, won by 1st Battalion, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, and ending with a video contest, won by 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, the newest battalion to join the Vanguard Brigade. The winners received a donation to their battalion Family Readiness Group fund.
