NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Ryan Frye, a hydropower maintenance engineer at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Operations Division, is the Employee of the Month for July 2014.

Frye was chosen for and his significant contributions and outstanding support in coordinating the successful contract award for a low pressure pipe system and conventional sewer. The system replaces the existing sand filter systems.

As the project manager of this sustainability project, Frye served as the critical coordinator and assumed responsibility for the project from its concept to a successful contract award.

“I’m surprised and honored to receive the award but it feels great to know that they think my work is worthy for an award,” said Frye.

Although Frye works at the district headquarters, he was nominated by the staff at the Dale Hollow Resource Office for his outstanding support that highlights the collaborative working relationship between the district’s hydropower team at headquarters and the team in the field.

During the project, Frye made multiple site visits and coordinated with representatives from local and state offices to ensure all criteria and permits necessary for the new system were compliant and met the needs of the end users. He coordinated with the district’s engineering, contracting and operations divisions to ensure that all facets of the work were covered and completed in record time.

"Ryan has been a great employee and he has worked hard to make our project a success,” said Stephen Beason, the Dale Hollow Resource Office manager. “He clearly understands that his customer base extends beyond business lines and he is a great asset to the Corps' team."

Frye said one key factor of the collaboration involved keeping the local project informed of the progress and incorporating the local needs and concerns into the design and contract solicitation.

“I love working with our hydropower team in the district,” said Frye. “I really like working for the Corps and working with so many talented people throughout the district.”

As a result of Frye’s hard work and efforts, the district awarded a critical sustainability project to improve the sewer system for Dale Hollow Dam, Dale Hollow Dam campground and the Resource Manager’s Office.

“I’m happy to receive the award and proud to represent the Hydropower Office,” said Frye. “This is a team effort.”

Kellen Cole, also a electrical engineer and Frye’s co-worker, said Frye is a very organized, stays focused on projects and is a good person to work with.

“I’m very excited that Ryan was selected for the district employee of the month,” said Cole. “He deserves the award and we are all proud of him.”

Last week, Frye was also recognized for his service as a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Transatlantic District-North in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Kunduz, Afghanistan from August 2012 to August 2013. Frye deployed to a very remote region and helped coordinate major construction projects.

“This deployment helped me grow as a professional and a human being,” said Frye. “After working on projects in a dangerous part of the country, I’ll never look at third world countries the same again.”

Frye says the deployment gives him a better perspective on how work is managed by the Corps, and he had fun working with other great Corps employees from around the many districts.

“It was a good opportunity for me to see how the Corps helped the Afghanistan people, and it is great to be a part of the Corps that does good things for so many people,” said Frye.
