USS AMERICA – A Marine raised in a Trinidadian household, will reconnect with his heritage when he meets distinguished guests from Trinidad and Tobago during their visit aboard the future amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), July 25.
Staff Sgt. Steven Superville, a communications chief with Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force South, expressed how honored he is to have the opportunity to talk with the Trinidadian visitors.
“This is an opportunity that comes around once in a lifetime and I’m excited to be a part of it. I really hope to hear how the country and the culture have grown, and how the people have prospered,” said Superville.
Although he was born in the U.S., he possesses close ties to the Trinidadian culture.
“My mother and father were born in Trinidad, so I grew up in that kind of lifestyle,” said Superville, a 32-year-old from Brooklyn, N.Y. “Anytime I meet another Trinidadian, it’s always a good time. We always end up talking about the music, the food and the way of life. It’s always enjoyable.”
Superville worked as a DJ after graduating from Miami South Ridge High School when he decided he needed a change in his life for the better.
“I felt that scene was getting pretty old and I needed a career,” Superville said. “One day a Marine recruiter called me and I like what he offered me, so I joined.”
Superville left for boot camp Jan. 15, 2001, and is scheduled to be promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sgt. during the ship’s transit to the Western United States.
America is currently transiting through the U.S. Southern Command and U.S. 4th Fleet area of responsibility on her maiden transit, “America Visits the Americas”. America is the first ship if its class, replacing the Tarawa-class amphibious assault ships. As the next generation of “big-deck” amphibious assault ship, America is optimized for aviation, capable of supporting current and future aircraft such as the MV-22 Osprey and F-35B Joint Strike Fighter. The ship is scheduled to be commissioned Oct. 11 in San Francisco.
