Lake Cumberland Park Ranger
SOMERSET, Ky. – A local human services company recently enlisted the support of park rangers at Lake Cumberland to assist with educating employees about water safety.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District Park Ranger Ashley Glyn-Jones said Corps members accepted and met with Independent Opportunities personnel Jan. 10 to provide them important information that could one day save their lives in the water.
“The programs were very productive,” said Glyn-Jones. “We are happy for the opportunity to discuss what we know about inherently buoyant and inflatable life jackets, understanding signs of a drowning victim, hypothermia, and again reminding the group of the overall importance of water safety, which is to save lives,” said Glyn-Jones.
Independent Opportunities Direct Care staff member Monica Chowning volunteered to demonstrate the proper wear of an inflatable life jacket and inflated it.
“The relationship between the Corps of Engineers and Independent Opportunities has had a boundless and positive impact on our individuals,” said Chowning. “We look forward to continuing and strengthening our relationship between the two organizations through these types of programs.”
Independent Opportunities is a company that is committed to providing quality support and services for individuals with developmental disabilities. Independent Opportunities’ ultimate goal is to generate an environment for their clients to live, work, socialize, learn, and prosper.
Glyn-Jones said it is good to reach out to the community at events like this and stress the importance of being safe on the water. “Park rangers at Lake Cumberland strive to provide our lake’s visitors and the local community with the knowledge of what they should do while on or around water,” she added.
For current information about learning about water safety or the environment contact the Lake Cumberland resource office at 606-679-6337. Educational programs for large or small groups are available.
