MOSUL, Iraq — The Soldiers of Support Platoon, Headquarters, Headquarters Troop, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, transferred fuel to an Iraqi national contractor for transport in Mosul, Iraq, Nov. 9.
The local contractors started taking responsibility for transportation of fuel a few months ago. The fuel is used to maintain the communications and operations on Sinjar Mountain and Maqloub Mountain. The contractors are glad to be doing their part and it helps them keep business moving.
"If you need to move fuel, gravel; anything you need just call us," said Arkan R. Taha, supervisor, Cholo Company for general contracts. "This is a very good company. I like working for them."
The U.S. Soldiers are glad the local contractors have taken the transportation job, said Sgt. Ramon Maldonado, fuel section team leader, Support Plt., HHT, 3rd Sqdn., 3rd Armd. Cav. Regt. The local drivers have more experience on the mountain roads and probably can negotiate them better with the large vehicles.
The Iraqi police have accompanied the contractors during transportation in the past and now a private security company escorts the tankers.
"It's better," Maldonado said. "Now they know what they have to do when we leave."
Having private companies take responsibility for some security jobs, transportation of supplies and rebuilding of city areas shows progress and will help the economy in the long run.
