Rct. Edward Britt, Platoon 1057, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, performs ammunition can lifts during a combat fitness test Aug. 6, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The test also included an 880-yard sprint and the maneuver under fire, which is a timed 300-yard shuttle run in which recruits perform a series of combat-related tasks. The CFT, which simulates a wide range of physical challenges one might face in combat, evaluates strength, stamina, agility and coordination. Britt, a 20-year-old native of Franklin, Va., is scheduled to graduate Aug. 23, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
