3/4 Marines awarded Purple Heart

Corporal Matthew S. Babler, left, and Lance Cpl. Justin R. Beer, riflemen temporarily assigned to Wounded Warrior Battalion West, were presented the Purple Heart for injuries sustained from sniper fire while deployed with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, to Musa Qal'ah district, Helmand province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Major Gen. Lawrence D. Nicholson, 1st Marine Division commanding general, and a native of Toronto, presented the medals to Babler, a native of Monticello, Wis., and Beer, a native of Bushnell, Ill., during an award ceremony here, July 31, 2013.   • Lance Cpl. Justin R. Beer, a rifleman assigned to Wounded Warrior Battalion West, recently competed in the 2014 Marine Corps Trials at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif, March 6 to 12. Beer, a native of Bushnell, Ill., was wounded in the left thigh by enemy sniper fire, May 27, 2013, while deployed with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, to Musa Qal'ah district, Helmand province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. This week, Beer competed with wounded warriors throughout the world in the 200 meter sprint and archery events. Beer said he received excellent care at Naval Medical Center San Diego, and his recovery has been quick and easy. He enrolled in college courses while receiving treatment.
