The Coast Guard team was sponsored by the Hui Nalu Canoe Club and this marked the first time the Coast Guard had an official paddle team participating in the annual event. The course was one mile out and back from the beach at Waikiki where paddlers tested their strength and skill, combined with luck and the steersman's ability to catch a wave.
