Recruits of November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, wait to begin the last portion of their basic water survival qualification June 17, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. They had 10 seconds to shed all equipment that could pull them underwater in an emergency. Water survival training reduces fear, raises self-confidence and ensures recruits and Marines are able to survive in water. November Company is scheduled to graduate Marine Corps recruit training Aug. 16, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
