Sgt. Joseph Messina (right), a native of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and a squad leader within 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment “Battlekings”, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, holds up some of his gear as Staff Sgt. Pedro Ortiz, a squad leader from the 1st battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment “Battle Boars”, inspects to make sure he has everything he needs for the upcoming Field Training Exercise which is the final part of his assessment during the 2nd ABCT’s first Pre-Ranger course here April, 24. He is on his third from last day of his assessment, which was over a month long. The course started with 16 candidates but only three others made it as far as Messina did that day. The course is designed to prepare and to ascertain readiness of soldiers wishing to attend Ranger School. Right now the Army is experiencing a shortage of Rangers, and the founders of this program are hoping that it will increase the successful pass rate of Spartans wanting to go to Ranger School.
