The Best Ranger Competition was named in honor of Lt. Gen. David E. Grange Jr., a former Ranger instructor and Ranger department director, who, at one time, commanded Fort Moore (then-Fort Benning), the 2nd Infantry Division, and the U.S. Sixth Army. This year's competition marked the 40th anniversary of the competition and was a tribute to the Rangers past and present who have helped shape the Army into the premiere fighting force it is today.
