More than 40 Reserve Officers' Training Corps battalions from various colleges and universities in the northeast, as well as the U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Military Academy, sent their “best of the best” to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., Oct. 6, for the 2012 Ranger Challenge Competition. During this one-day competition, nine-member teams negotiated a 7.5-mile route that tested each team member’s basic military skills by negotiating numerous stations that include Obstacle Course, Confidence Course, Burden Leg Mission, One Rope Bridge, Hand Grenade Assault Course, Rappelling Operations, Weapons Station, Boat Movement, Tactical Combat Casualty Care Lane, and a Commander’s Challenge. The U.S. Army Cadet Command commissions officers to meet the Army’s leadership requirements; and provides a citizenship program that motivates young people to be strong leaders and better citizens. Hosted by the 2nd “Freedom” Brigade, the ROTC Ranger Challenge is a physically and mentally demanding activity that is considered to be the Army ROTC's varsity sport. Cadet Command's 2nd Brigade, headquartered at Fort Dix, New Jersey, is responsible for Army ROTC programs in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
