Col. Mark Weatherington, 28th Bomb Wing commander, presents retired Lt. Col. Donald Smith with an American flag that was flown over Afghanistan by a B-1 from Ellsworth on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 during a Military Appreciation Day event in Sturgis, S.D., Aug. 7, 2012. In addition to the flag, the shadow box also contained a piece of 88mm shell that blew Smith’s left rudder pedal off during one of his combat missions over Germany as a B-17 co-pilot.
