Colonel Peter Baumgarten (foreground), coming from U.S. Northern Command, relieved Col. David Furness as the commanding officer of 1st Marines during the brief ceremony. Furness will be transferring to Quantico, Va., to begin his next assignment as the director of Expeditionary Warfare School. In September of 2010, Furness led 1st Marines forward to Afghanistan and commanded Regimental Combat Team 1 throughout their yearlong deployment.
