Master Gunnery Sergeant Charles K. Eckhoff, the 1st Marine Division operations chief, addresses senior enlisted Marines during an E-9 summit here, May 17. Eckhoff explained the differing roles of sergeants major and master gunnery sergeants and emphasized that both ranks provide leadership to their units. The meeting gathered sergeants major and master gunnery sergeants to discuss the transition of the Marine Corps back to its roots. The senior leadership also plans to instill more pride in their Marines and sailors through drill, uniform inspections, unit physical training and more involvement in their lives.
