U.S. Navy Seaman Philip Christopher serves as a lookout on the fantail of the USS Underwood (FFG 36) as the guided missile frigate is under way in the Pacific Ocean May 20, 2012, for Unitas 53 Pacific (PAC). Underwood was representing the U.S. Navy in support of Unitas 53 PAC and Southern Seas 2012. Unitas, Latin for "unity," is an annual U.S. Southern Command-sponsored, multinational naval exercise designed to enhance security cooperation and improve coalition operations between South American and U.S. maritime forces. Southern Seas is a U.S. Southern Command-directed operation designed to strengthen relationships with regional partner nations and improve operational readiness for all assigned units.
