An Oregon Army National Guard Soldier, role playing as a civilian carrying a knife, is searched at a security checkpoint by soldiers helping to evacuate personnel from the Eugene Airport during the Vigilant Guard Exercise, in Eugene, Ore., May 3. The exercise is designed to test the interoperability of local and state first responders and the National Guard, and has been coordinated with U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Planners hope the event will enhance multi-agency cooperation and response in disaster situations.
