Michigan City, Ind., native Chap. (Maj.) Penfold, the chaplain for the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, spoke about how there was an interesting connection between the 1st Cav. Div. and the events on 9/11 during a prayer breakfast at Camp Taji, Iraq, Sept. 11. Penfold told the story of Richard Rescorla was not only a young, motivated officer in the first major offensive in Vietnam in the Ia Drang Valley with the 1st Cav. Div., but also the head of security for Morgan Stanley's Individual Investor Group at the World Trade Center. Rescorla died in the attack on 9/11, but not before saving thousands of lives - an almost mirror image of his actions in Vietnam where he kept his Soldiers motivated to fight and stay alive, said Penfold.
