Listening attentively while a range control instructor explains the Defense Advanced GPS Receiver (center), Staff Sgt. John W. Schillereff (38th Regional Support Group); Sgt. Justin D. Scotch, 962nd Ordnance Company (on left); Spc. Christopher P. Fitt, 439th Quartermaster Company; and Spc. Michael J. Zedick, 277th Quartermaster Company (on right); prepare for a daytime land navigation event during the 316th Expeditionary Sustainment Command 2012 Best Warrior competition. The four soldiers put their knowledge of the “dagger” to the test later that evening for the night land navigation. The event, held from March 29-April 1, at Fort Dix, N.J., tested 12 soldiers in day and night land navigation, weapons qualification, a 10-mile road march, and a range of Army Warrior Tasks. Competitors were also required to take a written exam, submit an essay and appear before a board of sergeants major. This year, the “Soldier of the Year” victory went to Spc. Christopher P. Fitt, 439th Quartermaster Company. Staff Sgt. John W. Schillereff, 38th Regional Support Group, won “Best Warrior” title for the non-commissioned officers. The two winners advance to the 377th Theater Sustainment Command Best Warrior competition.
