Contestants and spectators cheer their teams during the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command-sponsored For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) LEGO league robotics qualifying tournament gets underway at Eastlake High School. Twenty-four teams competed with programmed autonomous robots for a chance to advance to the Southern California championships. FIRST robotics competitions combine the excitement of sports with science and technology and create a unique opportunity for students to compete for scholarships while designing, building, and programming robots with professional engineers.
As the Navy's Information Dominance systems command, SPAWAR supports and encourages students to pursue careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
