Worcester, Mass., native Raphael D. Howard III, a captain assigned to B Company, 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion, a U.S. Army Reserve unit based at Newport Navy Base, R.I., receives a hand shake from 1st Sgt. Patrick D. Bujold, B Company first sergeant following the awarding of the Purple Heart Medal. Howard was asleep when an enemy explosion rocked Combat Outpost Dash-e-Towp and shattered glass severely wounded his left knee July 12.
