Aberdeen, Wash., native U.S. Army Spc. Nicole Derk, crew chief with the 3rd Forward Support Medevac Team, Company C, 3rd Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, tightens the screws on a UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter tail rotor during a pre-flight inspection Oct. 27 at the helicopter pad on FOB Shank. As a crew chief, Derk is mainly responsible for the maintenance of the aircraft. To aid quick response times upon receiving a medevac request, 3rd FSMT Soldiers conduct a thorough inspection of the helicopter and their equipment, stock medical supplies and stage their gear on the aircraft the morning of their shift. On average, the crews are able to take off five to seven minutes after receiving a call. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Andrea Merritt, 7th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment)
