U.S. Army Col. Al Swanda, chief of Joint the U.S. Military Advisory Group, U.S. Embassy, center, speaks with U.S. Marine Col. John A. Ostrowsky, Humanitarian Assessment Survey Team officer in charge, during a conference to discuss the current situation of the flooding and relief efforts of the Royal Thai Armed Forces at the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters in Bangkok Oct. 16. The HAST, consisting of 10 Marines from III Marine Expeditionary Force, assess damage caused by the flooding in Thailand and the possible support III MEF could provide to the Royal Thai Armed Forces. III MEF regularly trains to respond to natural disasters during exercises held on Okinawa and throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The role of the Marine Corps during any humanitarian assistance and disaster response is to rapidly respond with critically needed capabilities to deliver assistance and relief to areas requiring immediate aid.
