Commander Mark Winward, Regimental Combat Team 5 regimental chaplain, gives the invocation during the 236th Navy Birthday celebration here, Oct. 14. The Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, established by the Continental Congress on Oct. 13, 1775. In 1972, Adm. Elmo Zumwalt, Chief of Naval Operations, authorized recognition of that day as the Navy's birthday.
