Maj. Karl Schmidt (left) and Maj. Leron Lane grew up in the Havelock area and have been friends since elementary school. Schmidt took part in a promotion ceremony, promoting Lane to the rank of major, at the Millers Landing officers’ club on Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Sept. 4. Schmidt is the aviation training unit program manager at the KC-130 Aviation Training Unit on Cherry Point and Lane is a communications officer currently serving as the 2nd Marine Logistics Group G6 officer at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C.
