Petty Officer 3rd Class James Layton was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star medal for heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy while in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. When exposed to a hail of rocket and machine gun fire, Layton returned fire while gallantly attempting to save the life of his team leader.
