Cpl. Thomas R. VanderLaan, a correctional specialist at the Naval Consolidated Brig, works out during physical therapy at the Veterans Affairs Spinal Cord Injury Center, Aug. 22. VanderLaan is recovering from a broken C-5 vertebrae he suffered while tackling a weighted dummy during football practice with the Miramar “Falcons,” June 29, 2011. The break in his neck left him with loss of feeling in his nerves and the inability to walk.
