Rear Adm. Troy M. Shoemaker, commander of Carrier Strike Group 9, discusses a Sea Perch flotation robot with students from the Iridescent science camp during a guest appearance as part of Navy Week 2011. Iridescent is a science education nonprofit organization partially funded by the Office of Naval Research, which specializes in creative and hands-on science and engineering classes for inner city children. Los Angeles Navy Week is one of 21 Navy Weeks being held this year across the country. Navy Weeks are intended to showcase the investment Americans have made in their Navy and increase awareness in cities that do not have a significant Navy presence.
