Private Jordan Barthel, an Elkton native, with the South Dakota Army National Guard's 115th Network Support Company, Brookings, places sandbags on a levee at the city Water Reclamation Plant to protect the facility from flood waters. More than 600 South Dakota Guardsmen have been called upon to assist the communities affected by the Missouri River flood. National Guardsmen have been focusing on sandbagging operations for use by city government and residents to protect infrastructure assets and private property. All available state Army and Air National Guardsmen are on alert for possible mobilization to provide flooding relief.
