Lt. Gen. Charles Jacoby (left), the commanding general of Multi-National Corps-Iraq, pins the Purple Heart medal on Sgt. Direk Cartwright, of Los Angeles, during an award ceremony Sept. 1 at Combat Outpost Cashe South, Iraq, located in the Ma'dain region outside eastern Baghdad. Cartwright sustained an injury when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during a combat operation May 17. He was one of three Paratroopers in the vehicle who sustained injuries due to the blast. During the ceremony, Jacoby stated that these troopers "took the enemy's best shot and are still fighting." Cartwright is a team leader assigned to Troop B, 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Multi-National Division-Baghdad.
