Maj. Gen. Michael Dubie, the adjutant general of the Vermont National Guard, talks with 93-year-old Army Lt. Col. (ret.) Gordon Smith, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany on June 17. Smith was attending the 65th anniversary celebrations of the D-Day invasion at Normandy when he fell ill, requiring hospital treatment. He said he served in the Army from 1938 to 1968.
