Officers from A and B Company, 1-175th Infantry Regiment, Maryland Army National Guard, competed in the annual Army National Guard Best Ranger tryouts between Nov. 18-21, 2014, at Fort Benning, Ga. First Lt. John Villanueva from B Company, 1st Lt. Sean Gramm from A Company and 1st Lt. Henry Hensley also from A Company, represented the 1-175th and the MDARNG in the assessment. Rangers from across the Army National Guard competed for nine slots, which comprised of four primary two-man teams and one alternate team. The evaluation was offered by the ARNG Warrior Training Center, and tested the candidates ability to handle various complex mental and physical tasks that could be performed during the 2015 Best Ranger Competition. These events included a Ranger Physical Fitness Test, tower assault course, obstacle course, 5.6-mile buddy run, day/night land navigation, and a 16-mile foot march with a 50-pound ruck. As a result of their hard work and determination, Gramm and Hensley were selected by the Warrior Training Center (WTC) to represent the ARNG in the 2015 Best Ranger Competition. Both officers will begin training at WTC in January for the competition. This is the first time the MDARNG has been able to field a complete team in the competition. The 2015 David E. Grange Jr. Best Ranger Competition will be hosted by the U.S. Army Ranger Training Brigade, and will be held from April 10-13, 2015, at Fort Benning, Ga. The grueling three-day competition will challenge 50 two-man Ranger teams from across the United States Armed Forces, and will determine one Best Ranger team.
