Staff Sergeant Gabriel Schaller (right) discusses procedures to take while sweeping for improvised explosive devices with soldiers from the Burundi National Defense Force (BNDF) in Bujumbura, Burundi, Nov. 6, 2014. The soldier who was sweeping with a metal detector came across a possible IED and then passed hand-and-arm signals back to the other BNDF soldiers on patrol to alert them of the danger. Schaller is an explosive ordnance disposal technician with SPMAGTF-Crisis Response-Africa, training alongside the BNDF, teaching basic infantry tactics, engineering, logistical support, countering-IED, lifesaving techniques and convoy operations to prepare them for an upcoming deployment in support of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
