An artificial cavity was inserted into a Longleaf Pine tree at Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, Sumter, S.C., Oct. 28, 2014. The artificial cavity was created to assist the Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, an endangered bird, that normally excavate their nest cavity in living Longleaf Pine trees.
