Personnel from the Applied Physics Lab Ice Station prepare to mine ice to bring back fresh water to the camp. Due to the extreme salt content of the water, ice mines, which are pockets of older ice where the salt has leeched out over time leaving fresh water, is a necessity to support the ice camp. Two Los Angeles-class submarines, USS Helena and USS Annapolis, will participate in the exercise with researchers from the University of Washington Applied Physics Laboratory and personnel from the Navy Arctic Submarine Laboratory.
