The rank of chief petty officer was established April 1, 1893. The gold fouled anchor, as it rests on a shadow box, is the emblem of a Navy chief petty officer. Attached to the anchor is a chain and the letters – USN. To the novice, the anchor, chain and letters only identify a chief petty officer, but to a chief, these symbols have a more noble and glorious meaning, unity, service and navigation.
