U.S. Coast Guard Seaman Jake Thomas assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Kakui, applies cleaner, lubricant and preservative to rigging chains fastened to buoys during an aids to navigation mission Sept. 2, 2014, at Midway Atoll, Hawaii. The Coast Guard crew of the Kakui inspected, maintained or replaced 12 buoys during the mission. Buoys need to be inspected every two years and need to replaced every six years.
