Senior Chief Religious Programs Specialist Terry Burrell salutes the passing Joint Color Guard during the opening ceremony of the ninth annual Walk Out of Darkness in Virginia Beach, Va., Sept. 6. The crowd was estimated at over 5,000 people, making it the largest gathering in the country. The Walk Out of Darkness events are held throughout the country to raise awareness and to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide, research, education and advocacy. September is suicide prevention month and this year the Navy is promoting the message “Every Sailor, Every Day” to encourage all Sailors, leaders, families and members of the Navy community to strengthen their connections with those around them.
