Rct. Ashley Diaz, Platoon 4031, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, looks through her compass during land navigation training Aug. 11, 2014, as part of Basic Warrior Training on Parris Island, S.C. This practical application training ensures the recruits can navigate foreign terrain using only a map and compass in case electronic navigation should fail. Held during the 10th week on Parris Island, BWT introduces recruits to basic field skills all Marines must know. Diaz, 20, from Winnebago, Minn., is scheduled to graduate Sept. 5, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
