Rct. Brian Bence, Platoon 3061, India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, responds to orders, during his first incentive training session June 3, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Drill instructors use incentive training, which consists of physical exercises administered in a controlled and deliberate manner, to correct minor disciplinary infractions. The formal 70-day training schedule begins about a week after recruits arrive on Parris Island; recruits spend the first week in-processing and learning basic procedures and expectations. Bence, 23, from Hagerstown, Md., is scheduled to graduate Aug. 22, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
