Pvt. Derick Ward, of Lacey, Washington, slices into a cake for the U.S. Army’s 239th birthday June 14 at Ziemsko Airfield, Poland. Ward’s unit, Company C, 1st Battalion, 503rd Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, has been in Poland for several weeks training with Canadian and Polish paratrooper units. Soldiers from the three countries have shared knowledge and procedures as well as learned about each other’s weapons and equipment. Ward, a forward observer for the 173rd Airborne Brigade, is 18-years-old and as the youngest Soldier on ground was given the duty of cutting the cake.
